A question we get asked a lot here at Kingshill Studios is “When is a good time to have professional baby photos taken?”.

To answer that, in this article we’re going to share with you the key milestones in your baby’s first year. Typically, these are the most popular times for parents to hire a photographer to have baby photos taken.

How often should you photograph your baby?

Since your baby changes so much in their first twelve months, we highly recommend that you document their growth and development daily by taking snapshots on your phone or camera, as well have professional photos taken throughout the year.

Why? Well, baby photos taken by a professional photographer will be done to a standard that far exceeds what you’re going to be able to create at home. The images will be of a quality that you’ll proudly want to display as works of art on your walls at home, and they are a keepsake of an incredibly special time for your family.

Key milestones in a baby’s first year

These are the four major stages in a baby’s first twelve months of life and these are when you may want to consider hiring a professional family photographer to take your little one’s portrait.

After you’ve passed the adorable newborn stage, our milestone portrait sessions are the logical next step. It’s the perfect solution if you’re after beautiful portraits that celebrate them reaching the key milestones in their first year.

1)      NEWBORN STAGE: SLEEPING BABY PHOTOS

When you become a parent, whether for the first time or the fourth, it’s a hugely exciting and special occasion. You’ll likely want to preserve that moment in professional photographs.

Our specialist newborn photography service is perfect for you if you’re after baby photos that capture the gorgeous just-born stage.

Newborn photos are best done when your baby is days or weeks old. At that stage, they are still very sleepy and curled up in the foetal position. Because of this, we can capture those adorable sleeping baby photos that you’ll have seen in our newborn gallery.

We also may be able to photograph your newborn awake, which is also lovely! Not all babies sleep through their newborn session and it’s certainly not a problem if yours doesn’t.

2)      3 MONTHS OLD: TUMMY TIME

At a few months old, your baby has changed significantly from the newborn stage! They will have lost the curled-up shape they had as a newborn and grown a lot. They are spending more time awake and will be smiling back at you.

Their latest trick may also be ‘tummy time’ which is the precursor to crawling. This is a lovely stage to capture in photographs.

At three months old, your baby’s personality begins to shine through. They start to become so much more aware of the world around them. Thankfully for you, they may also be sleeping for longer between night feeds!

3)      6-10 MONTHS OLD: SITTING UP

Our Milestone sessions are incredibly popular with parents who are keen to capture the moment their baby can sit up by themselves. This is a huge milestone for your baby!

Best suited to babies aged between 6 and 10 months, these are cute, simply styled shoots for babies.

By this stage, they’ll be smiling and giggling and curious about everything! So, these sessions are always lots of fun and are a great way of getting images of your baby which are packed with personality.

4)      FIRST BIRTHDAY: CAKE SMASH PORTRAIT SESSIONS

When it comes to the time of your baby’s first birthday, your baby is probably crawling and perhaps even taking their first steps. It’s a big event in your baby’s life and one that many parents want to capture in photographs.

Our cake smash sessions provide an opportunity for them to celebrate their birthday with their very own birthday cake and are great fun for your little one.

No matter if they make a mess – that’s the whole idea! The photos of them playing and tucking into their cake is brilliant to look back on!

There’s also a bath splash opportunity included in the session. So, don’t worry mums and dads – they’ll be all clean and sparkly again by the time you leave the studio! We clear up all the mess and you get to take what remains of the birthday cake home to enjoy.
