It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!! How exciting! Once again, I’m looking forward to having local families join me in the studio for my annual Christmas mini sessions at Kingshill Studios.
One of the most common questions I get asked by clients at this time of year is what they should wear to their Christmas mini sessions, and it’s important that you do consider this well before the date of your photoshoot.
So, if you’re bringing your children to see me in the coming weeks for festive portraits, then read on! I’m going to be sharing my top tips on what to wear to your Christmas portrait session.
Your Christmas portrait session: Why styling is so important
First up, let me be clear. Your choice of clothing for Christmas mini sessions is very important, and naturally, you’ll want your children to look fabulous in your photos.
Your portraits will look so much better if you have considered the clothing and accessories that each child will wear.
While we aren’t wanting every family’s portraits to all look the same or for you to feel limited to wearing what I advise here, what does look great on camera is a coordinated look that is suitably festive.
So, let’s get specific! Here are my top tips on what your children should wear to your Christmas mini sessions at Kingshill Studios:
What to wear to Christmas mini sessions at Kingshill Studios
This year, my festive set up in the studio is cosy and inviting.
Twinkling Christmas trees are decorated with red, gold and silver baubles. A mahogany-look fireplace is accessorised with red and white candles, red berries, and a Christmas wreath.
Rich red velour curtains hang beside the large window, and luxuriously wrapped gifts are displayed on the floor, along with red, gold and silver-coloured traditional toys.
Traditional Christmas, eat your heart out!
1. Wear something red!
Red clothing would work brilliantly with my festive setup!
Dresses, tops, shirts and even trousers that are red or have accents of red, would complement this traditionally styled Christmas scene. Red, of course, works well against the bright red colour of Father Christmas’ coat and hat!
Red checked material looks lovely too. Think dresses, shirts, skirts and shorts with a tartan check – that would be perfect!
2. Colours that complement red
If you’d prefer not to wear a large amount of red, complementary colours such as creams, greys, dark greens and white would work well. Try to avoid black if possible.
I recommend that you choose plain clothes – so without branding, if possible (as this can date the pictures), and with minimal or no busy patterns which may prove distracting to the eye.
For accessories, crisp white socks and red, black or white leather or patent shoes on little girls are adorable. Older girls may prefer smart boots, while boys may prefer black shoes or smart trainers and dark socks.
3. Choose well-fitting clothes
One of the most important things to consider is that your children should feel comfortable in what they’re wearing. So, please dress them in clothes that fit well.
If your child is feeling uncomfortable in what they are wearing – perhaps the shirt is itching their neck or their shoes are too tight – then this will make them feel uneasy on the day.
4. Aim for a consistent look
Ideally, if there’s more than one child, they should be dressed to a similar level to each other.
What I mean by that is that if your daughter is wearing her sparking festive party dress, shiny party shoes, then your son should wear a smart shirt and shoes for example
While you don’t need to ‘dress up’ necessarily, most people do choose to wear smart clothes rather than casual. That said, jeans are fine with a shirt – it’s not so much about the individual items of clothing but how you style it.
5. Style it your way!
This leads me onto…styling.
Although the Christmas mini sessions at Kingshill Studios this year are traditional in feel, you can choose to wear traditionally styled clothes for a vintage Christmas look. Or you may prefer to stick to contemporary styles – modern-cut shirts, dresses etc. It’s completely up to you and your family.
If you have more than one child, siblings can look adorable in matching outfits. Or you may want to dress each child individually.
Whatever your preference, feel free to bring along any accessories you may want to incorporate into the photos. Hair accessories, hats, bow ties, blankets and even your child’s favourite teddy are all very welcome!
