Today, I’m writing about family photo wall layout ideas.

I’ve received many wonderful testimonials from my clients recently (by the way, please leave me a Google or Facebook review if you haven’t already – it really helps my photography business get discovered by others like you).

Many of those families have also sent me photographs showing how they have displayed their family portraits within their homes.

With their kind permission, I’m going to share those with you here. My hope is to inspire you on how to make the most of your beautiful family portraits once you’ve had a photoshoot with me.

Why invest in wall art?

Before I get into more detail about how to display your professional family photos, and specific family photo display ideas, I’ll briefly mention WHY I suggest you invest in wall art.

It essentially comes down to this.

Your portraits, and the special and fleeting moments they capture, are important memories for your family. They will bring you a lifetime of happiness but, if they are not printed, they can easily be forgotten! What a terrible shame that would be!

I’ve written previously about how to get the most from your professional family portraits, and I’m always saying to my clients, “please save and print your family photographs”. I sometimes feel like a broken record, but I’m really passionate about this!

Now onto the tips on how to display family photos!

Pro Tip! First off, you should only ever print high-resolution images.

When you purchase your portraits, I provide you with high-resolution files that are suitable for being printed BIG in incredible quality. This means that you could confidently have your photos printed at pretty much any size you wish.

1: Individual prints mounted and framed

You may have a favourite family or child portrait that you’d like to have on display within your home. A stand-alone image – and the bigger the better – looks stunning when beautifully mounted and framed.

It might take pride of place on your mantelpiece or on your bedside table. Or you might choose to hang it on the wall of your hallway or living room, in your home office or in your child’s nursery, or somewhere else entirely.

Here are some examples of how customers of mine have displayed individual prints around their home.

As you can see, these show monochrome as well as metallic framing options. They also prove that there’s no need to stick to traditional frames and finishes. You could choose to have canvas prints, acrylic prints or even eye-catchingly beautiful circular orbs!

No 2: Create a photo wall collage

Alternatively, you might wish to group photos together into a photo wall collage display.

You could have them individually printed and mounted at the same size, and then display them together. Or have a couple of photos printed at a larger size to the rest and display them creatively alongside each other, whether in straight lines or in more of a dynamic layout.

No. 3: Multi-aperture frames

A third way of displaying your photos is to use a multi-aperture frame. These can include three, six, nine or more photos all within the one frame.

They are fantastic for those times when you have so many photos you love and you want to enjoy all of them!

They are also great for telling a story – whether it’s wedding photos documenting your special day or showing how your baby has grown in their first year.

Wall art framing options

When it comes to the finishes of your frames, you could either stick to one colour and style or choose contrasting colours (black and white work really well together, for example). Or, you can use a mixture of framing options.

The possibilities are endless really!

Your family photo wall

In terms of where to display a family photo wall gallery, you could use the wall space on the stairway to great effect or any wall in the home with the space to feature your photos.

How you choose to display your family pictures is ultimately down to personal preference, but I hope that I have inspired you with these examples and family photo wall hanging ideas!

Let me know in the comments how you display your favourite family photos in your home. I’d love to hear about it and, even better, why not send me some photographs?
