Today, I have something slightly different to share with you and, that is, the news that I have become a Burgess of the City of Aberdeen!

Earlier today, I attended a ceremony in the city, where I was officially inducted along with five others.

Colin Taylor, Lord Dean of Guild of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen performed the ceremony and I was also welcomed by the full council of Aberdeen who was there to watch. (Along with some of my very proud family members.)

A surprise nomination!

It was a complete surprise to me to learn that I had been nominated for the role but it’s a huge honour to be recognised for my charity work and services to the local community! I am incredibly humbled.

Local charity supporter

I have lived in Aberdeen for the last 7 years and have always been passionate about playing an active role in the local community. I continue to do what I can to support local charities that care for vulnerable children and families.

My photography studio runs limited edition Superhero portrait sessions and we’ve raised money for several local charities including the Duchenne UK charity, which supports local people living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This year, we are supporting AberNecessities, a local charity who supports families and children who are in need in our community.

I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to volunteer for lots of different local charities, such as Friends of Anchor’s ‘Courage on the Catwalk’ event and for the Russell Anderson Foundation.

I also have an extensive background in education – I was a headteacher of a local school for two decades before becoming a professional photographer. In fact, at one point I was Aberdeenshire Council’s youngest headteacher at 29 years old.

I’ve led and been part of fantastic teams who have worked with children and families from all walks of like  – and to be honest, they have ALL had a positive impact on changing MY life for the better.

Burgess of Aberdeen

Becoming a Burgess of Aberdeen essentially gives me full rights of citizenship in the city. First mentioned in historical documents in the year 1124, now, some 800 years after it’s formation, the City’s Burgesses now number around 1100.

Those who become a Burgess of the City of Aberdeen have been admitted on the strength of their character, professional reputation and involvement in the civic life of the city.

I will certainly continue to play an active role in the Aberdeen community, just now with the additional title of Burgess of Aberdeen!  I would like to thank everyone who has and who continues to support my efforts.
